What is Baptism?

25 May 2014

When the Church baptises people, it needs to explain why, what and who's it is for. To be baptized is to join "The Family" and to join the family is to join the family business - which is mission, discipleship and relationship.

Put simply, when baptized, we are baptized into the name of the Father. With God as our father we and everyone in the Church (that is the Body of Christ not the building - 1 Corinthians 12) – are part of the same family, God’s family. And to be part of God's family is to receive the same DNA of the Father which in turn produces in us the same work ethic - mission mindedness.

We are also baptized, immersed, into the name of the Son, Jesus. With Jesus as King of our lives, we will now begin to live as one who serves him and others with our entire life, not just departmentalise our lives when we want it to suit us. We live our surrendered lives the way Jesus did. Here, our 'discipleship' is identified by way of how we seek to resemble the life and ministry of Jesus.

And finally, we are baptized into the name of the Holy Spirit. That same Spirit, that sent Jesus on his mission, and empowered everything he did now lives in and sends us out on the very same mission. All of that is true for us too.

Therefore, if we are baptized, we are baptized into the family of the Holy Trinity and The Holy Trinity are a mission minded family; "God so loved the world that He sent....." As Christians...we are all part of God’s family of missionary servants sent as disciples who make disciples. To be paptised is to be mission minded, and as Christians we are a family on mission!
