Authentic love seeks to teach, correct and even rebuke.

02 Feb 2015

The apostle Paul wrote: "Husbands, love your wives as Christ loves His Church" (Ephesians 5:25) This love is a sacrificial love, a subservient love, a Philippians 2:5-8 love; but, at times it is also an 'instructing, correcting and even rebuking' love (2 Timothy 3:6) Scripture also says: 'The Lord disciplines those He loves' (Hebrews 12:6) revealing that real love, authentic Christ like love wants to see the best in others, as The Holy Spirit seeks to draw out within us the Christ like image within. This comes by way of trials, tribulations, times of testing, discipline and even rebuke, so that we are 'shaped' into The Father's Son Jesus. Throughout the Old Testament we see God chastise His people in order to chasen them to be holy and set apart -

Isaiah 57:17-18 - For the iniquity of his covetousness I was angry and struck him; I hid and was angry, And he went on backsliding in the way of his heart. I have seen his ways, and will heal him; I will also lead him, And restore comforts to him And to his mourners.’

The danger comes when we refuse to take responsibility for our actions, refuse to accept the prompting of the Holy Spirit's conviction and the submitting to the admittance that we are sinners who need correcting, informing, rebuking and challenging, all so that we bear God's character, which produces 'perseverance which produces hope' (Romans 5)

If we are not open to be taught, corrected and even rebuked, we reveal a spirit that is unteachable, this is not a Christ like Spirit (Luke 2:52 'and Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.' Pride is the cancer of the soul. Unteachable people are inadvertently declaring that they know better than The Lord. Here is sinking sand not a foundation to stand upon in which to weather the storms of life. Proverbs 27:17 'as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another' as well as 'faithful are the wounds (rebuke) of a friend’ - vs 6.

If I try to speak into someone's life about a wrong choice, when I try to reveal to them about their lack of responsibility for their actions and when I try to teach, speak, correct and even rebuke, I do so to bring them out into the open, so as to grow and put to death the offending issue that is an offence not only to The Lord but an insult to those around them. I do so because it is a Godly principle, I do so because I love them and want to see them become the people of God they so want to be. Hiding from correction and refusing and rejecting accountability will not bring growth, it will only feed isolation. No one, absolutely no one is above reproach, correction, advise, rebuke and discipline.  A teachable spirit is a humble spirit, it reflects Christ - Philippians 2.
