Revd Steve - 17 Jul 2017

Let me begin by making three statements about tithing:         1. Tithe means “a tenth” – Genesis 28:22 – “…all that you (God) give me I will surely give a tenth (tithe) to You.” The word tithe in the Hebrew means “a tenth.”

2. Tithe means it’s all God’s anyway – Leviticus 27:30 – “And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’S, It is holy to the LORD.” To be ‘Holy unto The Lord’ is to be made separate, set apart. 1 Peter 1:16 reminds us ‘be holy as he is holy’ this means not bits but the whole - the Shama

3. Tithe means, don’t steal from God.  Malachi 3:8 “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings.’

When we refuse to give back to God that which is rightfully His, we actually rob Him. That’s utterly mind boggling.

2 Chronicles 29:14 ‘Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.

Leviticus  27:30 ‘The tithe is The Lord’s’

The word tithe = 1 tenth. 1 tenth of our earnings. In other word’s as soon as we earn money, a tenth goes to God, it’s called ‘our first fruits’.

So, if you earn £1, 10pence goes to the Lord (widows mite) if you earn £10, then £1 is given to The Lord.

If you earn £100, £10 is given to The Lord and so it

goes on. When we understand that our finances BELONG to

the harvest keeper, rather than the harvest worker, we become ‘cheerful givers’ who give obediently, willingly.

Just to give you some idea of how important this is to God, within scripture there is about 500 verses concerning faith, about 500 verses concerning prayer, but there are over 2,000 references towards money.

God, through His Word has revealed that our money is an issue for Him. Not because He needs it, because he doesn’t, but because WE do! And since we are important to God, our money is important to Him too. The question is, is it important to us?

In Matthew 6:21 Jesus said: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart will be also.” Revealing, that money is a heart issue.

Since the beginning of time, tithing has been God’s method. But, some Christians justify not tithing by saying that it was under the law, and now because of being under grace, we no longer need to obey the law. Here’s the problem with that concept, God put tithing in the heart of His people long before the law was ever given, thus establishing it as the foundation of giving.

The first practitioner of tithing was Abraham who lived 400 years before the law,  God used Abraham as the prime illustration to model this act of obedience and worship, because it is an act of worship, it is our offerings of thanks, our sacrifice of worship.

Genesis 14:18 ‘And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.’

And get this, Abraham did it out of gratitude not legalism

The main reason some Christians don’t tithe is because they haven’t been taught.

So, what is tithing?

1. Tithing is a matter of the heart not the wallet

2. Tithing is a matter of obedience not the law

3. Tithing is a matter of scripture not the preacher

4. Tithing is a matter for Jesus not the earner

5. Tithing is a matter of blessing over curses.

Why should every Christian tithe?

1. God Himself planned it.

Genesis 14:18 - Abraham and Melchizedek

2. Jesus endorsed it. Matt 23: Jesus, point by point attacked the Pharisees, until it came to tithing, and he said ‘you got that one right’.

3. The Apostle Paul taught it. Paul was trained -1 Corinthian 16:2 ‘On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income.’ This mirrors the tithing principle.

4. For the work of God.

Mission must be paid for.

5. It bring God honour ands glory.

We don’t give to the church we give to glorify God within His Church.

How do we tithe?

Joyfully. Sacrificially. Obediently. Immediately. Worshipfully

Let me say this: tithing won’t get you to heaven as salvation isn’t found in works. Tithing blesses God, others and you. See to it and then see what will befall you from heaven. Your barns won’t be big enough to collect the master’s provision. In fact, test Him on this.

Conclusion: The truth about tithing is this....when we are faithful & obedient in the tithe:

-We are doing what God has asked of us. We provide the resources for His work. We testify to His faithfulness in our lives. We honour Him and acknowledge that He is worthy of our worship.

I want to ask you something, would you tithe for just three months; just to see what The Lord will do in honouring His principle. ‘test’ Him, as He has requested, see what He will do ‘pressed down, overflowing in your lap’.
